What is mundan?

Many of us believe that shaving a kid’s first hair will make it thicker and will promote to good hair growth. Some says shaving the head will not have any effect on baby’s hair growth. There are many other reason why Hindus believe in Mundan ritual...

The scientific reason:

after reading a lot about it , we found that Vitamin D is made faster and in more quantity in baby’s body when exposed to sunlight without clothes and hair. When a tonsured head is exposed to sunlight it absorbs the sunlight better.

The religious reason:

According to religious texts, a soul gets a human body after experiencing 84 lakh yonis and also said every yoni has its influence on human birth. The shaving off hair from a child’s head is a gesture of purification from the previous yonis and freedom from the past.

Other reason:

  • The natural growth of hair on a baby's head is uneven. Shaving off the hair from the baby's head helps in proper and healthy growth of hair.
  • The ceremony is performed to give the kids freedom from diseases, give them strength, health and vigour.

Should We Shave a Baby’s Head If He Has Cradle Cap?

Cradle cap is dry and dead skin that may be present on your baby’s scalp. Some parents may think that shaving may get rid of this condition. However, this doesn’t always work. Instead of shaving, you can use other measures to cure cradle cap such as using natural oils, medicated shampoos, and other preventive measures. Shaving your baby’s head should be your choice, don’t do it because someone forces you to. Keep in mind that even if you do plan to shave your baby’s head, he should be prepared for it. Also, it would help if you consult your baby’s doctor first before and then take an informed decision.

There are uncountable traditions and beliefs but it completely depends on you that what you want to believe. Do what your heart says and be cautious because you definitely not want to harm your baby.
