Pregnancy Pampering - What should you do?

This precious time comes with a lot of do’s and don’ts. Watch out for the list of things to avoid for a happy pregnancy.

For all that she endures, I can think of no one more deserving of a little pampering than a pregnant woman. She certainly deserves to put her feet up, kick back and get some royal treatment at least during those 9 months.

We strongly believe in facts that are backed with expert opinions. Pregnancy is the time of your life where exercising caution is mandatory in every walk of the day. Pampering yourself is needed now more than ever. Enjoy the good things, but watch out for the bad guys. Here are the things you need to avoid while pampering yourself during pregnancy.

Disclaimer: Please consult your gynaecologist before doing any treatment during pregnancy!

1. GETTING LASIK EYE CORRECTION

Playing With A Purpose

Due to hormonal changes of pregnancy and breastfeeding your eyes and vision may be impacted. This is why it’s advised to delay Lasik until after pregnancy, and you’ve returned to at least two normal menstrual cycles.

2. CHEMICAL BASED SKINCARE PRODUCTS AND TREATMENTS

Pregnancy or breastfeeding is not the best time to go all out with a cosmetic overhaul! Most chemical peels and laser treatments have not been studied in pregnant or breastfeeding women so the effects are unknown. Work with your dermatologist and doctor if you have specific skin issues or treatments you’d like performed.

A word on skincare:

Our skin is highly absorbent, meaning that much of what we put on our skin ends up inside our bodies. Little evidence exists to show the effects of specific products during pregnancy. Most women prefer to choose to use natural beauty products and skincare as possible during pregnancies.

No need to obsess about swapping ALL your skincare products out. Slowly swap out products as you need to replenish and make simple choices when it’s easy.

Here is how to take care of your skin during pregnancy!

What about Hair Dye?

Although research is very limited, most evidence indicates that colour treating hair during pregnancy is safe. Preferably, seek a more natural/organic salon and waiting until the 2nd trimester when baby’s organs are more developed. If you do choose to colour your hair, consider these general safety precautions from the Food and Drug Administration:

  • Follow package directions carefully.
  • Wear gloves when applying hair dye.
  • Leave the dye on your hair no longer than directed.
  • Rinse your scalp thoroughly after using hair dye.

If you work in a salon and are exposed to large amounts of chemicals, talk to your doctor about ways to minimize exposure. Most importantly, ask your doctor for guidance if you’re concerned about the safety of your hair products and hair dye during pregnancy.

3. SAUNAS & HOT TUBS

Playing With A Purpose

It’s easy to overheat while in a sauna or hot tub, causing your body’s internal temperature to rise and potentially harming the baby. It’s best to avoid hot rooms and tubs during pregnancy.

4. GEL MANICURES

Playing With A Purpose

Gel manicure may be quite tempting for you, but it may not be completely safe for you. According to dermatologists, there are many toxic compounds in the gel. These compounds can prove harmful to you and your baby. The gel can get absorbed through your nail beds.

The toxic compounds can get absorbed in your skin in this way. A gel manicure can be harmful in this case during pregnancy.

5. BODY WRAP

Playing With A Purpose

Body wraps can help to tone your skin and detoxify your body, which can certainly be advantageous when you aren’t expecting; however, when you have a bun in the oven, a body wrap has the potential to be harmful to your little one.

Body wraps involve wrapping the body with ace bandages and other constricting items. Because of the pressure, they can put on your stomach, there are certain risks, so it’s best to avoid them. If, however, you are having another part of your body other than your stomach wrapped, that should be perfectly fine. Having the legs and arms wrapped, for example, shouldn’t impost any danger to your baby. To err on the side of caution, though, make sure you speak with your doctor before scheduling an appointment for a body wrap to ensure that it will be a safe treatment.

6. USING ALL ESSENTIAL OILS

Aromatherapy can offer a wealth of benefits. It can soothe the senses, ease stress and relieve anxiety and tension. However, some essential oils are used in aromatherapy that has the potential to be dangerous to an expectant mama and her developing baby.

There is a lot of conflicting evidence regarding essential oil use during pregnancy. Some experts think that certain oils can induce labour; however, many essential oils can provide much needed soothing during pregnancy.

Playing With A Purpose

Before you have an aromatherapy treatment, make sure you talk to your doctor first to find out what type of oils you can use and what types should be avoided. Generally, you will find that the majority of essential oils are safe to use during pregnancy and will provide you with a wealth of benefits.

There are plenty of things that you can do to pamper yourself while you are pregnant that you can be sure will be safe for your developing little one and will give you the relaxation that you are seeking. Taking a long nap with the support of a comfortable body pillow is safe for baby, and can do you a world of good.
