Benefits of Almond Oil Massage for Babies

Almond oil for infants is the preferred choice for parents for massaging their little ones. Enriched with the goodness of Vitamins A and E, fatty acids and minerals, almond oil for baby massage has amazing benefits.   

What is almond oil?

There are two types of almond oil, bitter and sweet. Both varieties are made from the Prunus dulcis tree. The almond oil is extracted by pressing or grinding almonds and may be refined by using heat or chemical solvents.

Is almond oil safe for baby skin?

Sweet almond oil is edible and safe. Avoid bitter almond oil as it can cause poisoning.

Prevents Skin Problems: Almond oil is enriched with the goodness of vitamin A, B2, B6, D, and E.  These vitamins help combat skin problems like rashes, soreness and eczema. 

Soothing Effect: Almond oil enhances blood circulation in your baby’s body, soothing the tired limbs and strained muscles.

Relief from Cradle Cap: Cradle cap is an inflammatory condition common among babies. Gently rub sweet almond oil on the affected area to treat it. 

Emollient Oil: Almond oil has linoleic and oleic acid. This makes it a natural moisturiser for babies.

Nourishes Hair: The Vitamin E, potassium, omega-3 fatty acid and magnesium in almond oil nourish and strengthen baby’s hair, also preventing hair fall. 

Good For Bones: Baby joints and bones are strengthened by the Vitamin D, potassium, and calcium in almond oil.

How to massage your baby using almond oil

Take proper care and be gentle when you use almond oil for baby massage. Follow these step by step guidelines:

  1. Pour a few drops of almond oil onto your palm. Then, rub your hands to spread it across your palm and warm it. You can also warm the oil in a steel bowl. Then, begin with the leg, by placing your hand around one of the thighs and gently pull your hands down to the feet. Repeat this and switch to the other leg and the soles later. Repeat for arms and hands.
  2. Join your palms together and place your hands over the centre of your baby’s chest and then move your palms outwards towards the shoulder. Repeat this 3-4 times. Then, place your hands, palms down over the centre and massage slowly towards the stomach. Repeat this 2-4 times.
  3. Turn your baby over for a back massage, making him lie down on his tummy. Place your palms just below the neck and stroke down slowly with one hand and then another one towards the waist. Follow the spine, but ensure you don’t rub the baby.
  4. To massage the ears and face, follow upward and outward strokes on the face and around the ears.
  5. For a head massage, apply a few drops of oil on the scalp and rotate your palms gently on your baby’s head. Pat the head gently instead of applying pressure. 

Important measures to consider while using almond oil for infants

  • If there’s a history of nut allergy in your family, using almond oil for baby massage is avoidable. Apply a drop of almond oil and wait for 2-3 days. If there’s no sign of reaction, then you may use almond oil. 
  • Check the expiry date before buying and using almond oil.
  • Don’t use too much oil as excess oil might cause rashes.
  • Take care that the oil does not enter the baby’s eyes, ears, or nose.
  • Wipe your hands before picking up your baby because it might cause an accident if your hands are slippery. Wipe off excess oil from baby’s body as well.
