10 movies that all kids will love to watch

Everyone has those movies they wanted to watch over and over as a kid. These are those movies. The films that you watch during childhood have a special kind of on-screen magic. They become part of kids’ imaginations and make an indelible imprint as those kids grow up. They have adventures galore, whether they’re in NYC, Neverland, or a chocolate factory, and they also have lots and lots of heart. Others we love (but—spoiler—that aren’t on this list) are The Secret Garden, Big Hero 6, Moana, James and the Giant Peach, and My Neighbour Totoro, so add them to your to-watch list too. Download these classic children's movies or pop them into the DVD player, and you’re sure to find your 10-and-unders’ new favorite films—and, as a bonus: Parents are sure to love them too. These are great family movies the whole gang can enjoy.

1. THE POLAR EXPRESS (2004)

The Polar Express is a story of a boy who travels to the North Pole in an imaginary train called the ‘Polar Express’.

On his way, he makes new friends, learns the true essence of Christmas, and eventually meets Santa Claus himself. A heart-warming tale that should put your baby in the mood of Christmas.

2. MARY POPPINS (1964)

Though the backstory of why Mary Poppins exists on the big screen is more fraught than even the purported biopic can bear, the truth is, what ended up on screen became something else. It’s a classic charmer that belongs to the generations, and it’s practically perfect in every way—from its sing-along to the relatability of being a kid just trying to get the attention of too-busy parents.

3. THE LITTLE MERMAID (1989)

Your little one may not know or care that this dazzling animated musical ushered in the beginning of Disney’s fabled Renaissance period, but the kid will find him or herself spellbound by its feisty heroine . The Little Mermaid also contains one of Disney’s most underrated sequences: “Les Poissons,” designed to instil a lifelong fascination with French silliness.

4. HOME ALONE (1990)

A family frantically leaving for their holiday at the last moment realizes that they forgot one member of their family – eight-year-old Kevin – at home.

The film then goes to show the desperation of Kevin’s mother to return to her son and how Kevin, who is alone at home, fights off robbers right on Christmas Eve.

5. THE LION KING (1994)

A young lion prince is born in Africa, thus making his uncle Scar the second in line to the throne.

Scar plots with the hyenas to kill King Mufasa and Prince Simba, thus making himself King. The King is killed and Simba is led to believe by Scar that it was his fault, and so flees the kingdom in shame.

6. PINOCCHIO (1940)

Not only is Pinocchio the perfect vehicle to teach a child the importance of telling the truth, it’s an excellent film to crack open the darker corners of their imaginations as well. From a wooden puppet who comes to life, to adventures inside a whale and on an island of misbehaving boys-turned-jackasses, Disney’s version of the Italian fairy tale mixes unnerving visuals with fantastical highlights that became Disney trademarks.

7. TOY STORY (1995)

Woody, Buzz, and the gang got their start in this animated Pixar classic, about toys that come alive when their families leave the room. And even as it inspires children’s imaginations to run wild, Toy Story also introduces kids to important entertainment tropes like mismatched odd couples.

8. HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS! (1966)

Children will encounter grinches of all sorts in their lifetimes—in other movies, at school, at work, you!— Based on Dr. Seuss’ classic Whoville-set story, it’s one of the most beloved Christmas TV specials, and Boris Karloff’s delicious narration will permanently imprint the short-film’s best lines on the childhood subconscious.

9. WILLY WONKA AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY (1971)

Join Charlie Bucket and Grandpa Joe as they tour Willy Wonka’s infamous chocolate factory alongside unforgettable characters like Augustus Gloop, Veruca Salt, Mike Teavee, Violet Beauregard, and their accompanying insufferable parents in this classic musical masterpiece.

10. THE JUNGLE BOOK (1967)

Inspired by Rudyard Kipling’s "Mowgli" story, The Jungle Book follows the ups and downs of the man-cub Mowgli as he makes his way back to the human village with wise panther Bagheera to escape ruthless tiger Shere Khan. Along the way, he meets unforgettable friends and foes including mad King Louie of the Apes, the hypnotic snake Kaa and the loveable, happy-go-lucky bear Baloo, who teaches Mowgli “The Bare Necessities” of life and the true meaning of friendship.

10 feels like such a small number when it comes to these precious movies, we have so many more movies that we love like Winnie The Pooh, Up, Shrek, Kung Fu Panda, Minions, FINDING NEMO, Frozen, Alice in Wonderland, The Harry Potter Series. Each of these movies has a unique lesson for your baby. We know that too much screen time is not a good thing, but do space out all the must watch movies for your baby to make sure they get all the goodness from each of these beautiful movies.
