A Guide to tame toddler tanturms

Are you worried about how to get your kids to listen to you without yelling or losing your cool? Worry no more!

The good ladies at MomsKnowBest are here to your rescue with some simple tips, tricks and best kept secrets to get your children to listen to you at the very first attempt.

But first, you need to know what often makes the 'act of obeying' so difficult for them! Let’s get the curtains off that mystery, shall we?

In the early stages, children are living in a world of their own. They are experiencing brain development in the greatest way possible (a thousand things are going on in their mind, all at once) and hence they find it difficult to understand the behaviour and standards of reality. They are roughly struggling to comply with the rules and regulations imposed on them.

Think about the days when there are a hundred worries in your mind and you get annoyed when asked to do a silly task. You're irritated for no logical reason, aren't you? That's exactly what's happening with your toddler every day. Their brain is not processed enough to understand the logic and hence, every reaction is an emotional one. At this point, when they are trying their best to accept new practices and comprehend things, you can be a good parent by maintaining a positive attitude and by having lots of patience. (We mean it when we say LOTS!)

The only way to get your kids to listen to you is through the following actions:

1. State clear expectations and boundaries

This is the first and the most important thing to do when you want your kids to listen to you. You're sure to save up on a lot of time and effort if you can master this simple art. Always make it a point to tell your kids as to what you are expecting of them; like completing their homework, packing their bags, eating food, going to bed or simply maintaining a respectful attitude. This helps the kids understand what they are supposed to do, and there is no room left for confusion, doubt or conflict.

2. Don't ask for too much at once

Asking too many things at once can create an unusual pressure on the kids which they are not generally used to. Stick to your point, be precise and allow them some time to calmly do the task that they are assigned.

3. Turn the tables

How can you expect your children to listen to you if you're not listening to them?Sit back and communicate with your kids. Ask them why they are not able to complete a certain task. Understand what's stopping them and advise some fun solutions. Tell them how completing the task can benefit them in good ways and politely discuss the consequences of their wrongdoings. You need to understand 'communication' is the only soft weapon that you can use to get rid of the negative behaviour and disobedience.

4. Be consistent, follow-through and don't let them take you for granted

Work towards establishing a culture of first-time listening. Let the kids know you are very serious about the expectations that you've set. Show them when Mom-the boss says it she 'means' it. If the kids know your statement is not going to be followed by any action but just dull reactions, they will register this behaviour and will lose trust in your words. (Let that sink in. It's harsh, but ultimately the truth)

5. Applaud good behaviour

Tell them what a wonderful job they did. This will boost their confidence and will give them a feeling of achievement. If you're lucky enough, then it will also motivate them to do things without even asking.

If you're able to inject these 5 tips into your daily routine then we believe no power in the world can stop you from acing the parenting game. Don't forget, to turn your rules and regulations into fun and games. No matter how stressful it gets, there is no room for yelling. After all, you're the mother of a toddler. You know you love your little one a bit too much!
