Using Skincare Products during Pregnancy

How do you ace the pregnancy glow game without getting overwhelmed?

If you are pregnant, you’ll soon realize that hormones can wreak havoc on your skin. Sure, you may well get that glow that everyone is talking about, but you may also wind up with adult acne, dry skin or even hyper-pigmentation. To add insult to injury, some of your usual go-to's are now too harsh for your super-sensitive expectant skin, and some of the more potent ingredients are also toxic and unsafe for your growing fetus. Long story short: beauty during pregnancy is a total minefield. So what’s a mama to do? Refresh your skincare cabinet with skincare products that are clean and effective!

1. Moisturize In the Morning

As basic as it sounds, keeping your skin moisturized while pregnant is extremely essential. Why? Because on top of all the hormones that can agitate your skin, parts of your body are growing, expanding, and stretching. This can lead to tight, itchy skin that can make your pregnancy more uncomfortable than it should be. Moisturise frequently to avoid stretch marks, reduce itchiness and soothe the dry skin caused by pregnancy. Moisturise all over your body, especially knees, elbows, nipples, etc, as they tend to become even drier.

We suggest applying a pregnancy-safe skincare product like The Moms Co Body Butter in the morning and at night to keep your skin soft and supple. Pregnancy-safe moisturizers are specifically formulated with natural ingredients like avocado peptides and ceramides to keep your skin hydrated and healthy. Additionally, pregnancy-safe moisturizers are hypoallergenic, compatible with breastfeeding, and safe for mom and baby.

2. Hydrate. Hydrate. Hydrate.

Though they sound similar, moisturizing and hydrating are two different ideas when it comes to skincare. The main responsibility of a moisturizer is to set a barrier between the air and your skin to keep water from evaporating. Hydrators, on the other hand, are formulated to increase the water content of your skin. Ideally, you would want to apply a hydrator first to put moisture into your skin, followed by a moisturizer to seal the hydration throughout the day. Used together, they form a solid foundation of a pregnancy-safe skincare routine.

3. Ditch your usual anti-acne spot treatments

Benzoyl peroxide and clindamycin, which are excellent for acne otherwise, should be avoided during pregnancy even if there is a sudden breakout of acne. You can instead use mild AHA topicals available off the counter that contain glycolic acid, as they will help heal the acne and are safe. Other topical but prescription-backed creams would be erythromycin or azelaic acid, but even those have to be used under your doctor's guidance, never without.

4. Exfoliate Once A Week

Your skin does a great job of repairing and rejuvenating all by itself. You can help the process, though, by exfoliating stretch-marked skin once per week. Exfoliating helps remove the top layer of dead skin cells and promotes growth and healing in the deeper layers of skin where stretch marks form.

One of our beloved exfoliants is baking soda. It’s all-natural, affordable, won’t harm your baby, is gentle on your skin, so they won’t cause dryness, irritation, or inflammation and can be used on any part of your body. The best time to exfoliate is in the morning after your skin has had time to complete its natural reparative process. Pick one day each week to help heal pregnancy stretch marks by exfoliating the skin on your belly, hips, thighs, and bust.

5. Cleanse well

You may be one of the lucky ones, flaunting that coveted pregnancy glow, or you could be the awkward one having breakouts that remind you of your teenage nightmares. While you can’t do much about the hormonal rollercoaster ride, you can ensure you’re cleansing your skin well every day to maintain clear pores and to remove dirt and makeup which only adds to the problem.

6. Be Extra Sun Safe

A less than ideal side effect of pregnancy is your sensitivity to the sun. You can burn much more easily while pregnant and yet want to avoid chemical sunscreens. The best advice is to stay out of the sun by finding shade and wear a broad-brimmed hat. Get yourself a pregnancy-friendly sunscreen that contains zinc oxide - it’ll be a bit more laborious to apply but worth it, like

7. Prevent Stretch marks

We know you were waiting to spot this one! They say an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. That’s certainly true when it comes to these scary stretch marks. Following the same steps that will help you prevent stretch marks during the first nine months of your pregnancy will go a long way toward keeping your skin tight after your baby is born. Products like bio oil work to keep skin soft and supple. This helps minimize the scarring and fine lines that may form as your skin stretches to make room for your baby. We recommend massaging this or any other stretch mark treatment into vulnerable areas like your stomach and hips every morning and evening for at least 2 months postpartum.
